We live in a museum age. More museums are being visited by more people than ever before and over the last generation we have witnessed an explosion of museum-building projects. In fact, this is really a second "golden age" of museum building, and in his talk historian Steven Conn will compare the museums built during the first "golden age" — the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries — with their more recent counterparts to explore what has changed, what hasn't, and what has driven the museum project of the recent past.
